2015 marks the 50th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s death. L’Equipement des Arts commemorates Churchill’s
life and legacy by highlighting our collection of rare photographs of the War time hero and great Statesman.
In 1980 Elsbeth Juda presented to the National Portrait Gallery a remarkable collection of bromide prints, negatives, contact sheets, and news cuttings relating to a little-known but extraordinary session which took place on 17 October 1954 at the request of her friend Graham Sutherland.
The painter asked her to provide visual reference for his ill-fated portrait of the 79-year-old Winston Churchill, who was shortly to resign as Prime Minister. The 49 images that resulted tell a remarkable story.
